PoetryFahrenheit 451 Kahoot
The Truman ShowFahrenheit 451In creative writing the students will read Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury. The students will be able to connect this story to creative writing. Bradbury uses many strong images in his writing which includes many types of figurative language. He wrote this novel in a library. I think that this is a great book for creative writing and can show students the power of books. We will have discussions about many themes and motifs in the book such as censorship in writing.
Short Stories
Short StoriesCreative writing has started with reading short stories to discover what makes up a good short story. The students will then be writing their own short story at the end. The first short story we read is "The Monkey's Paw" written by W.W. Jacobs. The students then had to write their own ending to the story, since it leaves the reader on a cliffhanger. The students' endings were all very creative!
Semester 1 Exam ProjectThe students all did a great job on their blog projects! Below are the links to the students' blogs.
Exam ProjectThroughout the semester, the students have been working on researching a world issue. With this information, they have created a blog about the issue of their choice. They also have to create a Plan of Action for their issue to try to solve the problem. The project and the presentation is the final exam for the semester. I have attached the project requirements and the rubric.
Book Report Prompt and RubricI have attached links to the book report prompt and the rubric. These are due on your exam day.
Hamlet"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner"We are currently reading the poem "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This is a long lyrical ballad that has many themes that relate to the Romantic Era for literature. We will discuss the ideas of nature and the supernatural elements within this poem.
RIP Gatsby! The students wrote either an obituary, an eulogy, or an elegy for Jay Gatsby from the narrator, Nick's perspective. The students were able to put themselves in these shoes and were able to produce some well-written work!
The Eyes of Dr. T.J. EckleburgThe students are working on reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The students read about one of the settings called the Valley of Ashes. Compared to East Egg and West Egg, this place is very dirty and is where the poor people live. This billboard overlooks the valley and is a significant symbol in the novel. The students had to use the description of this billboard and the valley to show me what they interpret. They did a great job!
The Great GatsbyStudents are reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The students should enjoy this novel and the themes that it describes. For the introduction to this novel the students had to analyze different opinions about topics such as if you should choose to marry based on financial wealth, or if it is okay to commit a crime.
College Essay WritingStudents have been working on writing their hypothetical college application essays. I think this experience will help with giving them a base idea for writing a college application essay in the future.
