Semester 2 Book Reports
Throughout the semester the students have been reading a novel of their choice independently. For their final exam, they completed a project on their independent novels of their choice. The students all did tremendously well on their book reports!
A Long Walk to Water
Please click the button for the link to the kahoot review.
A Long Walk to Water
The students will be reading the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. This is a nonfiction novel about Salva Dut who was a Lost Boy during the Sudanese Civil War. The students will enjoy this book knowing that it is nonfiction and that our main character Salva is continuing his work in Sudan one step at a time.
WWII Guided Independent Book Report
The students will be reading a novel of their choice set during WWII. This will give the students an opportunity to read about the events that took place during WWII as well as understand the events of the Holocaust. This is an independent project in which they will read their book and type a report at the end but the students will have help with the historical background and the different terminology needed. The link for the project is below. To introduce this unit I posed many statements on the board. The students had to tell whether they agreed or disagreed with these statements and why. The students did a great job discussing what these statements mean and how they are related to the books that they are currently reading.
Book Reports
The students chose their project for their independent book reports. All of the students did a great job showcasing what happens in their novels. Many students created new covers for their books, compared the book to the movie, drew a map, or drew a comic strip. These all turned out great!
Final Exams
For the middle school students, their final exam will be their book reports for their independent novels. The students can choose one of the seventeen options that are on the Book Report sheet. The students will then present their book reports to the class during their exam time. Please see the links below for the option and the rubric.
School On Main Street
The final project from The House on Mango Street. Each student wrote 6 entries about their lives. I think this book turned out great!

Meeting Challenges
![Picture](/uploads/8/7/8/8/87881816/published/path.jpg?1512422335)
As we finish up our project for The House on Mango Street, our next unit deals with meeting challenges. All of the characters within these stories that we will be reading have overcome some sort of challenge in their lives. The students will be able to make connections to themselves and to the stories in the textbook.
"Four Skinny Trees"
The students learned about symbolism in literature. They had to critically analyze the vignette "Four Skinny Trees" in the novel The House on Mango Street. They either had to draw a picture of what happened in the vignette showing what the trees represented or rewrite the chapter without using the word "trees". The students did very well on this assignment.
Grammar Test!
Students will have a grammar test on unit 1 tomorrow, 10/20.
The House on Mango Street
We are starting the novel The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. It discusses many themes in the short vignettes throughout the novel one of them being coming of age. It follows a young Latina girl, named Esperanza, while she grows up in a low-income neighborhood in Chicago.
Coming of Age
Students are currently focusing on the theme Coming of Age in our textbooks. We have read many stories such as: The Drummer Boy of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury, An Episode of War by Stephen Crane, Charles written by Shirley Jackson, and a selection of poetry as well. We are also working on grammar. We are focusing on what makes up a sentence and the parts of a sentence.

Fahrenheit 451
The students created name poems from the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The students chose a character and wrote characteristics and personality traits about their character on each circle starting with that letter of the character's name. They turned out great!
Fahrenheit 451
We will be watching The Truman Show in class. The students will then have to write a short essay comparing the main character of Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag, to the main character of The Truman Show, Truman Burbank.
The students have begun reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The students are very interested in the topic. This is going to be a great unit!
