The Wave by Todd Strasser
The next book we are reading as a class is The Wave by Todd Strasser. This book is based on events that happened in a classroom in Ben Jones' history class in Palo Alto, California in 1969. Ben Ross began his unit on World War II with a documentary film on the concentration camps. His students were horrified that such an event could ever have ever happened. They start asking Ben questions that even Ben could not answer. Ben devised an experiment of his own, which would show the students how easy it is t blindly follow others. I think the students will really enjoy reading this book.
Make One Change
In the novel the teacher, Ms. Gruwell, has the students make a toast to change. She bought them new books. These books inspire the students to make a change in their lives. The students in our class each made a goal. This could be something they want to accomplish and/or change. All of our goals turned out great! I hope we will be able to achieve all of our goals.
The Freedom Writers Diary
![Picture](/uploads/8/7/8/8/87881816/freedom_orig.jpg)
The next novel we will be reading as a class is The Freedom Writers Diary. This novel has many different diary entries within from students growing up in Los Angles in the 1990s. Each student has encounter many difficulties in life and because of these, has affected their ability to do well in school. Because of these stereotypes, many teachers did not put forth the effort to help them. Erin Gruwell their freshman English teacher, will change theses students' lives. This book tells their story.
I think the students will really enjoy the raw emotions portrayed in this book and will connect to how the students are able to overcome their challenges to help them succeed.

"The Monkey's Paw"
The students were assigned to write a new ending to the story "The Monkey's Paw". The rising action of the story is extremely intense but the climax isn't as exciting. I asked the students to write an alternate ending to the story. They all were very creative!
The students will read three short stories, "The Monkey's Paw", "The Cask of Amontillado", and "From Beyond". All of these stories are from the Horror genre. I think the students will really enjoy these short works of prose.
Night by Elie Wiesel
We have just started reading the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel. Elie recounts the events that happened to him during his time spent in the Holocaust. In May 1944, the Nazis deported 15-year-old Wiesel and his family to Auschwitz, a concentration camp in Poland. Wiesel's mother and the youngest of his three sisters died at Auschwitz, while he and his father later were moved to another camp, Buchenwald, located in Germany. The students will read about the horrors that Wiesel experiences in the concentration camps.
Slam Poetry
![Picture](/uploads/8/7/8/8/87881816/published/poetry.jpg?1507256828)
We worked on some poetry within the past week. I showed the students different examples of slam poetry in class. We also discussed what slam poetry is and how we can define it. I then asked the students to write their own slam poem. They had to pick a topic that was meaningful to them and it had to include an emotion. The students all wrote great poems and some students even shared these with the class.

A Long Walk to Water
The Contemporary Literature class is currently reading A Long Walk to Water written by Linda Sue Park. This is a dual narrative story; one narrative is fiction and one is based on a true story. It tells the story of Salva Dut, a Sudanese Lost Boy who had spent years in refugee camps trying to get away from the fighting. Salva did survive and was given the chance to come to America. He then created a nonprofit organization, Water for Sudan, where they dig wells for the people in Sudan so everyone can have access to clean drinking water. The students are enjoying this novel and have often thought about how they would feel in Salva's shoes.

Create your own Flag
Students had to create a flag based upon a dream they have or something that they would fight for. Each student's flag express many different aspects about themselves.
The Red Badge of Courage
Student will be reading The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. I think the students will really enjoy this book as well as be able to understand the Civil War and writing styles of the period.
transcendentalism
We have been working on a period of literature known as Transcendentalism. Many writers during this time advocated to go out into nature to be closer God and ourselves. The students have enjoyed this unit so far. We have created Emerson's Instagram. The students either drew or chose pictures from the internet that Ralph Waldo Emerson could have posted on his Instagram page, if indeed Instagram or the Internet was invented during that time. The students also had to provide a rational of why he would post these pictures.
Modern Scarlet Letters
We created our modern scarlet letters. Each student chose a characteristic about themselves and created a scarlet letter. These turned out great!
